Renters Insurance Information

With renters insurance, you will be able to replace what is damaged or stolen.

Renters insurance can protect you from damage due to lightning, fire, smoke, explosions, wind vandalism and theft. It can also cover water damage that is the result of a plumbing break.

If the home you rent is damaged by a flood or earthquake, you'll need to buy separate policies for those damages — as they aren't covered under standard renters insurance policies. Routine wear and tear is also exempt from coverage; this is the renter's responsibility.

Renters insurance can cover additional living expenses.

If a fire, severe storm or other covered disaster forces you out of the home you rent temporarily, renters insurance can help cover the additional living expenses. This insurance policy can cover hotel bills, temporary rentals, restaurant meals and other living expenses incurred while your home is being rebuilt. Coverage for additional living expenses can differ from company to company.

Renters insurance can also cover you if other people are injured at your home by you, a family member or a pet. The policy can help you cover legal defense costs if you are taken to court over these injuries.

Decide How Much Insurance You Need.

The amount of coverage you take out depends on the value of your possessions. Take an inventory by adding up the cost of the items you'd want to replace if they were damaged or stolen. This will help you determine how much coverage you need, and it will also make filing a claim easier, should that be necessary. Record model numbers, dates and places of purchase for your possessions, and also take photographs or videos of the items. Be sure to keep a copy of the inventory in safe place away form your home, in case the home is leveled by a disaster.

Regardless of whether you rent an apartment, condo or house, you'll need a renters insurance policy to protect your belongings. Even if your landlord has insurance, it will only cover the building, and not your items.
